Oil Ministry to Contract Firms to Estimate Oil Reserves

oil2SANAA, 28 Dec – An official at the Ministry of Oil and Minerals Monday announced plans to contract international companies to calculate Yemen’s oil and gas reserves, the ruling party weekly, al-Mithaq reported.  The official who was not identified said the ministry is working to change the terms of the production sharing agreements signed with oil companies operating in the country “so that gas associated with oil production could be exploited,” adding “the government is seeking to find out Yemen’ reserves of liquefied natural gas and study needs for the establishment of a petrochemical industry by the end of 2012.”  “Yemen signed seven production sharing agreements this year,” he said, adding “Yemen will be receiving offers from international companies that are interested in petrochemical industry.”

One Killed, Five Injured in Clashes in al-Dhala

southern6mAL-DHALA, 28 Dec – One man was killed and five others injured in clashes Sunday between gunmen and security forces in the southern city of al-Dhala, the pro-government daily, Akhbar al-Youm reported, adding “the gunmen were trying to force people to close their shops in response to a call by tribal leader Tariq al-Fadhli.”  Meanwhile, four children were wounded when a bomb went off near the headquarters of the Political Security Organization in al-Dhala amid news 20 protesters who staged demonstrations in the region were arrested.

Rebels: Commander Alive, Repulsed Saudi Incursion

warinsadaasaudi9SANAA, 28 Dec – The official spokesperson of the Shiite rebels, Muhammad Abdul-Salam Monday denied media reports field commander of the rebels, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi is dead.  Abdul-Salam who was speaking to the Doha-based al-Jazeera TV said the group leader is well and alive and slammed media reports as “state fabrications.”  Meanwhile, Yahya al-Houthi, the commander’s brother Monday said “reports about the death of Abdul-Malik are not true and authorities in Yemen repeat such lies to cover up for their crimes against Yemeni prisoners of war,” adding “until now they killed more than 120 prisoners in air raids.”

UNHCR Aid Shipment for IDPs Delayed Over Border Dispute

SADAA, 10 Oct — Wrangling over border procedures between Saudi and Yemeni officials Saturday stopped a UN aid shipment destined for 3,000 displaced Yemenis who have been strangled at Alab border after fleeing the war between Shiite rebels and government forces in north Yemen.  Three tractor trailers laden with tents, mattresses, soap and other necessities arranged by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) were held by a dispute over how to transfer the goods from Saudi trucks to Yemeni trucks at Alab border outpost.

 

Saleh Vows to Crush Shiite Rebels in North Yemen

SANAA, 14 Oct — President Ali Abdullah Saleh Thursday promised to crush the Shiite rebels in north Yemen.  “We promise you that victory is coming soon,” Saleh told a rally in Sanaa held to mark the uprising in 1963 against Britain in the southern port city of Aden.
