Thousands of Pro-Government Tribesmen Gear up to Fight Rebels

AMRAN, 22 Oct — The military Friday announced it killed 28 Shiite rebels in separate clashes in the northern regions of Sadaa and Harf Sufian, the defense ministry website, 26-September said, adding “the military – in cooperation with noble citizens – foiled an attempt by the rebels to sneak into some areas in Harf Sufian and killed several of them.”  The tribal grouping of Arhab announced late last week it was sending 2,000 armed tribesmen to fight the insurgents in north Yemen as several tribes in Amran province announced plans to send fighters to help the army in its battle with the insurgents.  Tribal sheiks in al-Janat, al-Jabal and other districts in Amran said they were mobilizing the people to fight the rebels.  Meanwhile, the rebels said in a statement on their website they took over two military outposts in the district of Razeh in Sadaa, adding “the two outposts have been completely controlled and all arms, ammunitions and military hardware inside them were seized.”  On Thursday, the insurgents said they “infiltrated and blew up the military outpost of Manbah in Sadaa,” and showed pictures on the internet of what they claim “a proof we blew up that military outpost.”  In other reports, the independent News Yemen website Friday said “10 Huthi rebels were killed Friday noon when a military tank fired at one of their gatherings on the road linking Harf Sufian with the region of Barat,” adding “the field commander of the rebels, Yahya Kazmah was among the dead.”  Other reports said the commander of military division 103, General Omar Ali al-Aysi was killed Friday along with a number of officers in clashes with rebels in the city of Sadaa.
