Iryani Says Intelligence Agency Infiltrated by al-Qaeda

iryaniSANAA, 11 March -- President Saleh’s Senior Political Advisor, Dr. Abdul-Karim al-Iryani Friday denied reports Iran is supporting the secessionist movement in south Yemen and repeated his claims the Political Security Organization (PSO) in Yemen is “infiltrated by al-Qaeda,” stressing “I am not the first one or the only one who says that and I believe the 2006 jail break of al-Qaeda militants from the PSO prison in Sanaa could not have happened without the complicity of some smaller employees.”

Military Base Turned into Airport for U.S. Warplanes

armouredvehciles1AMRAN, 28 Dec -- Orders were issued Monday to commanders of the al-Jabal al-Asoud military compound in the war-torn region of Harf Sufian to “hand over some posts and central command to American soldiers,” the independent online website, Samaa reported citing ‘informed’ sources, adding “part of the military compound was turned into a temporary airport for American fighter jets.”  The new airport is located near the main highway linking Sanaa and Harf Sufian regions amid concerns the United States is planning to expand its military operations in Yemen.  “Observers have voiced concern the U.S. will have the upper hand to fight whom it sees as a threat to its security especially that Harf Sufian is a strategic area overlooking several villages and provinces in Yemen including Amran, Sadaa, Hajja, Marib and al-Jawf,” said Samaa.

Iranians, Lebanese Nationals Fighting with Rebels Killed in Strikes

hizbollah2SADAA, 26 Dec -- Five Lebanese and two Iranian citizens fighting alongside Shiite insurgents were killed last Thursday in an air raid that targeted a telecommunication outpost operated by the rebels.  The foreign men were training the Houthis on military tactics, and providing technical telecommunication support for them and were killed in the area of Shawarq in Razeh district amid reports 40 insurgents were also killed in the attacks.

Iran’s FM Calls for Regional Solution to War in North Yemen

iranfm1TEHRAN, 26 Dec -- Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki Friday told Tehran-based channel II that “Yemen is facing the problem of terrorism and al-Qaeda network,” adding “I believe Yemen’s internal crisis cannot be resolved except through dialogue and not by the military.”  He described the U.S. support of Yemen as “suspicious and aimed at the Islamic world,” stressing “the solution to the crisis in Yemen should be regional as Yemen is passing through difficult circumstances and committing massacres against the people of Yemen is not in the interest of anyone.”  On the border fighting between Yemeni Shiite insurgents and the Saudi military, he said “if Saudi Arabia is concerned about the integrity of its border, then it can preserve it without having to intervene in Yemen’s affairs.”

Al-Qaeda Militants Speak in Public in Abyan as Blast Kills Two

strike3BYAN, 21 Dec -- Al-Qaeda militants in Yemen Monday told a rally in al-Mahfid district in Abyan that their war was with the United States and not the Yemeni army.  The rally was held at a suspected al-Qaeda training camp to protest the killing of dozens of civilians in government raids last Thursday and one militant told the crowd: “Soldiers, you should know that there is no problem between us and you.  Our problem is with America and its agents.”  Later an explosion killed two people during the rally and wounded 14 others and security officials blamed al-Qaeda for the blast but al-Jazeera television said unexploded munitions from Thursday’s bombing was the cause.
