Authorities Say Somali Pirates Seized Yemeni Cargo Ship

somalipirates3SANAA, 28 Dec -- Somali pirates have seized a Yemeni cargo vessel with a crew of 16 and are taking it out toward the Indian Ocean, the military website, 26-Spetember said on Monday.  The vessel, called al Mahmoud II, had left Yemen’s southern port of Aden on December 18, with 15 sailors and a captain on board, the coastguard old the website, adding “the coastguard took the necessary steps to follow up on the hijacking of the vessel and returning it.”  Heavily armed Somali pirates have made tens of millions of dollars in ransoms by hijacking ships in the Gulf of Aden  which and the website said “41 commercials ships were hijacked in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea since 2009.”

Al-Ahmar Says Republican Guards Backing Shiite Rebels

Sheik Hamid al-AhmarSANAA, 07 Nov – Tribal leader and business tycoon, Sheik Hamid Abdullah al-Ahmar late Friday accused the Republican Guards of supporting the Shiite rebels in previous wars.  He said “the Yemeni army is no longer capable of ending the war in north Yemen militarily because it lost trust in the political leadership in Yemen which plays around with peoples’ lives.”  Al-Ahmar who was speaking to the Doha-based al-Jazeera satellite TV channel said “the Republican Guards headed by the President’s son supported the Shiite rebels in north Yemen in order to hit the First Artillery military division led by Brigadier General Ali Mohsen Al-Ahmar and hence get rid of him,” adding “a rebel leader is a friend of the President’s son, Ahmad Ali Abdullah Saleh.”

Ali Mohsen is President Saleh’s half brother and al-Ahmar talked about “internal conflict between the various wings inside the army about the war in Sadaa,” and called on President Saleh to visit Abyan or Sadaa “in order to prove to us that he is still the President of all of Yemen,” adding “the President no longer has a state to rule.”  “The state no longer exists except in the Presidential Palace and in the capital, Sanaa which is protected by 60 thousand troops,” Al-Ahmar said, adding “dialogue is the only hope to bring Yemen out of this situation,” stressing “dialogue with everyone is still possible to resolve the current crisis in Yemen.”  He accused President Saleh of “wanting to turn the country into a monarchy through his pursuit to install his son in power,” and renewed his call for the President to step down, stressing “changing the head is the door to reforming the situations in Yemen.”  “If President Saleh wants the people to stand by him against monarchism, then he should first get rid of his monarchy and if he wants people to stand by him to protect the nation’s unity, then he has to prove his patriotism by lifting injustice,” he said, and criticized the management of the war in north Yemen saying “the way this war is run has humiliated the army and caused it to lose its fighting moral.”

Mojour Tells Youth to Shun Extremism, Says Yemen is ‘Fine’

SANAA, 14 Nov — Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Mojour Saturday said his government is working to attain to the aspirations of the youth in Yemen and make their times fruitful.  Mojour who was speaking at the opening of the third forum of the creative youth said “the presidential program paid special attention to the youth and emphasized the significance of boosting their scientific, material and spiritual needs,” adding “Saleh’s program called for the creation of positive atmospheres to assist the youth grow up appropriately and focused on taking their hands to overcome challenges and shun improper ideologies.”  “Despite the challenges and in spite of the desperate attempts by those who chose the path of the devil to target the nation’s accomplishments, unity and democracy, we will succeed,” he said, stressing “Yemen is fine and its future will be better with your awareness and positive contributions.”

FM: We Did not Ask for Washington’s Help to Fight Shiite Rebels

SANAA, 14 Nov — Foreign Minister Abu-Baker al-Qirbi Saturday said Yemeni intelligence agencies are investigating “the involvement of non-official Iranian individuals in supporting Shiite rebels in north Yemen.”  He talked about Iranian media support of the rebels and said “Iran understands that it would never allow any group to raise arms inside its territories,” adding “by backing the insurgents, the Iranian media did not think of Iran’s interests and I told the Iranian foreign minister that Yemen wants a change in the stand of the Iranian media.”  “Yemen did not ask for the help of the United States in facing the Huthi gang of terrorism,” al-Qirbi said, adding “cooperation between Yemen and the United States is related to combating terrorism.”  The state official news agency, Saba late last week reported Yemen signed a military cooperation agreement with the United States but the US embassy in Sanaa denied the report saying “only the minutes of a meeting between US and Yemeni officials was signed,” and al-Qirbi said “the United States, Europe, the Gulf states and Arab countries all of them confirmed support of Yemen’s security and stability because everyone knows that the security of Yemen can affect the entire region.”  He described the rebels infiltration into Saudi territories as “an intrusion and I think they will pay dearly for that,” but he said “the geographical nature of the border area with the kingdom makes it difficult to establish complete security however coordination and cooperation in the future will put things in their proper place.”  On the economy, he said “after the unification and the defeat of the separatists, the state was hoping to focus its efforts on development and institutions but unfortunately and because of many reasons, chief among them the economy, the government’s plans were hampered out.”
