Oil Ministry to Contract Firms to Estimate Oil Reserves

oil2SANAA, 28 Dec – An official at the Ministry of Oil and Minerals Monday announced plans to contract international companies to calculate Yemen’s oil and gas reserves, the ruling party weekly, al-Mithaq reported.  The official who was not identified said the ministry is working to change the terms of the production sharing agreements signed with oil companies operating in the country “so that gas associated with oil production could be exploited,” adding “the government is seeking to find out Yemen’ reserves of liquefied natural gas and study needs for the establishment of a petrochemical industry by the end of 2012.”  “Yemen signed seven production sharing agreements this year,” he said, adding “Yemen will be receiving offers from international companies that are interested in petrochemical industry.”

Rebels Say Seized Saudi Post, Saudi Says Arrested 1,805 People in Ten Days

SADAA, 11 Dec -- In a statement posted on their website, Zaydi Shiite rebels in Sadaa Friday claimed they seized control  of a Saudi military outpost.  The statement said “the mujahadeen seized full control of the al-Jabri Saudi military post, seized weapons, communication devices, military vehicles, arms and surveillance equipment,” adding “more than 200

Saudi soldiers were forced to flee.”  “The control of al-Jabari post came as a retaliation for the Saudi continuous bombardment of Yemeni innocent civilians in Sadaa,” said the statement.  Muhammad Abdul-Salam, the rebel group spokesperson Friday said “the Saudis have tried, but in vain, to take back al-Jabri post and bombed it Thursday night,” but Saudi sources denied the claims saying they repelled an aggression by the Houthi insurgents.  Abdul-Salam said “fighting with Yemeni forces is intermittent in and around Sadaa province.”  Meanwhile, the Saudi-owned London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper Friday cited a senior Saudi military source as saying Saudi forces had detained 1,805 people including rebels and African refugees in the past ten days who had infiltrated the Kingdom from Yemen, adding “the army is conducting all its operations on the Saudi side of the border, without crossing into Yemen.”  Other reports said the rebels Friday shelled Saudi areas near mount Tawik.
