Rebels: Commander Alive, Repulsed Saudi Incursion

warinsadaasaudi9SANAA, 28 Dec – The official spokesperson of the Shiite rebels, Muhammad Abdul-Salam Monday denied media reports field commander of the rebels, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi is dead.  Abdul-Salam who was speaking to the Doha-based al-Jazeera TV said the group leader is well and alive and slammed media reports as “state fabrications.”  Meanwhile, Yahya al-Houthi, the commander’s brother Monday said “reports about the death of Abdul-Malik are not true and authorities in Yemen repeat such lies to cover up for their crimes against Yemeni prisoners of war,” adding “until now they killed more than 120 prisoners in air raids.”

Saleh Urges Troops to ‘Shield’ Themselves against Rumors

President Ali Abdullah SalehDHAMAR, 15 Dec -- President Ali Abdullah Saleh Tuesday visited a number of military units in the region of Dhamar, 80 Kilometers south of the capital, Sanaa.  Speaking to the troops, Saleh said “our armed and security forces are the symbol of national unity and have in their ranks citizens from al-Mahra, Midi, Sadaa until Aden,” adding “our armed and security forces have taught the enemies, mercenaries and agents tough lessons and our troops have made great sacrifices to preserve the country’s security and stability.”

He urged the troops to “shield themselves against diabolical rumors spread by Imamates, separatists and agents,” and lashed at what seemed to be Sheik Hamid al-Ahmar and his brother Hussein who have called for quick military end to the rebellion in north Yemen.  “Those who are calling for change should first change themselves and we say: Yes to change, reform, and transparency and no to mercenaries,” Saleh told the troops, adding “those who are calling for a military end to terrorists should end the presence of the rebels who are occupying their farms and villages.”  He said “we were soldiers like you ... history makers are few and those who sacrifice their skulls, bloods, and souls are the ones who make history.”  He later visited a compound where hundreds of tribesmen have volunteered to fight the rebels and told them: “This is not strange.  You defended the revolutions of September and October and defended the nation’s unity in the summer war of 1994,” adding “we welcome you and after you do you duty, the doors of the military will be open for you to join.”

Al-Ahmar Says Opposition’s Activities Frightened Regime

SANAA, 26 Oct — Tribal leader and business tycoon, Sheik Hamid Abdullah al-Ahmar Monday said arrangements for holding the oppostion-sponsored dialogue conference are underway.  Al-Ahmar who heads the committee of national dialogue at the opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) told al-Asima weekly that “all political powers, national and social figures in Yemen will be represented in the conference without excluding anyone,” adding “the regime continues to drag the nation into multiple crises and the conference aims at bringing the country out of these crises.”  “We are seriously working to find a national consensus to preserve Yemen’s entity and stability,” he said, adding “dialogue is moving in all directions and we have contacted opponents living abroad and invited them to be part of the national consensus.”  Several weeks ago, he called on President Saleh to step down accusing him of “dragging the country into a dark tunnel,” and official media lashed at him accusing him of hampering out the “development process.”  “What the state media have been babbling about shows the regime is frightened to see the Yemeni people respond [to the opposition’s rescue plan] and to see people are getting closer to each others and determined to take their future out of these hands that have wasted the country’s stability,” he said, adding “we will keep the media updated about our moves.”  The opposition is planning a meeting in Lebanon to address the problems of the country next month.
