Economic Conference Says Corruption, Security Hinder Progress in Yemen

SANAA, 14 Dec -- A statement at the end of a 2-day economic conference held in the capital to identify Yemen’s economic priorities Monday said “development and the economy are Yemen’s greatest challenges,” adding “security lax and corruption are the two most difficult obstacles in the way of political and development progress.”  The statement identified Yemen’s economic priorities as electricity, unemployment, the tax system, tourism, and investment, and called on political parties to pay sufficient attention to economic and development issues in their programs.  It also urged the government to spread awareness in the media about economic priorities and called on the civil society organizations to mobilize public support for economic and development issues and emphasized “it is essential for the private sector to participate in national dialogues.”

Yemen, WFP Sign Agreement to Continue Assisting IDPs

SANAA, 13 Dec -- Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Abdul-Karim al-Arhabi Sunday signed an agreement with Country Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), Gian Carlo Cirri to extend the period of providing humanitarian assistance and emergency relief to people displaced by the war in north Yemen.  The agreement called for extending assistance period until June 2010 during which the WFP is expected to provide  assistance to more than 30,000 children under the age of five, the state official news agency, Saba reported.  Al-Arhabi hailed the WFP’s assistance to the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sadaa and emphasized the “government is keen to contain the humanitarian implications of the war.”  For his part, Gian Carlo Cirri said the WFP is willing to continue providing aid for the IDPs and to boost government’s efforts in the field of food security.

Al-Qaeda Leaders Killed in Preemptive Airstrikes, Says 26-September

SANAA, 19 Dec -- The army website, 26-September Friday cited local sources in Abyan as saying “among al-Qaeda militants killed in the operation carried out by Yemen’s security forces in Abyan were Muhammad Saleh al-Khazimi, Moqbel Abdullah Awad, Ahmad Abdullah Awad, Mithaq al-Jald, and Abdullah Awad,” adding “the death of al-Qaeda dangerous member, Abdul-Manm al-Qahtani is not confirmed yet.”  Other government reports said  29 al-Qaeda operatives were arrested on Thursday, 13 in Sanaa and the rest in Arhab,” said 26-Septermber amid reports al-Qaeda leaders Qasim al-Reimi and Hazam Mujali escaped.

Other reports said Saudi al-Qaeda militants were killed in the raid including Abdullah Salam Ali, Abdul-Rahman Muhammad Qaid, Hidra Salem Ali, Fatah al-Amri, and Muhammad Ali Salam.  Al-Qaeda leader, Qasim al-Reimi is said to have slipped away at the last moment.  Meanwhile, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) Friday quoted US administration officials as saying American cruise missiles targeted two al-Qaeda training sites in Abyan but Yemenis officials insisted the attacks were carried out by Yemen not the United States.  New York Times Saturday cited officials familiar with the operation as saying the U.S. provided military hardware, intelligence and other support to Yemeni forces in their raid against al-Qaeda hideouts while Fox News said President Obama signed the order for the military strike in Yemen.

Opposition Chief Says Yemen Seeking to Wipe out Zaydis

SANAA, 06 Oct — Head of the opposition coalition, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP), Hassan Zaid Monday said “the war in Sadaa is initiated to obliterate the Zaydi ideology from Yemen and replace it with the Suni ideology,” adding “the war in Sadaa began when the state insulted the Zaydis and Hashemites, kicked them out of their jobs, and took over their mosques,” stressing “what is happening in Yemen is a war on behalf of other states.”  Zaid who was talking to Aylaf online magazine said “Zaydis in Yemen are treated as if they were foreigners or agents and as if they have no right to life and liberty.”  Head of the state-sponsored committee of Fatwa and Science, Dr. Aqil al-Magtarri rejected Zaid’s statements saying “the door is wide-open in Yemen for all sorts of religious sects and ideologies,” adding “contrary to what Zaid claimed, sensitive posts in the state are occupied by Zaydis,” but “those people have their own ambitions and like Jews, they forge the truth.  Their books and tapes are full of ideologies and doctrines that are contrary to the Zaydi creed.”  He said “Zaid and his alike want to internationalize the issue in northern Yemen and want foreign powers to intervene in the country under the pretext of ethnic cleansing.”
