Thousands Protest in the South, Dozens Arrested

AL-DHALA, 06 Oct – Thousands of people took to the streets in several southern regions on Tuesday calling for independence.  Nasser al-Khabji, a lawmaker from the south, estimated that at least 100,000 people were protesting in across southern Yemen, calling on the visiting secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Mousa, to “liberate the south” from the occupying north and urged him to oversee talks with the government that would allow the south to secede.   Since last August, several southern cities and towns have been the scene of constant demonstrations by disaffected southerners.  Meanwhile, the independent online news website, Marib Press said security in the port city of Aden arrested ten young protesters last night while police chased other protesters in the city.  A military source said “around 25 young men in the district of Krater in Aden tried to incite chaos and anarchy, held the flags of southern Yemen,” adding “we talked to some of them and then let them go.”  Other reports said female southern activist, Zahra Saleh was arrested along with 13 members of the southern Youth Union while they were in their way to Abyan to take part in rallies there.  Mahsen Farid, a leading activist at Yemen’s Socialist Party (YSP) was also arrested in Lahj.

Army Says it Killed 29 Rebels, Arrested 16 Others in North Yemen

SANAA, 06 Oct — The military Tuesday said the army killed 29 Shiite rebels and captured 16 others in separate clashes in northern Yemen.  The defense ministry website, 26-September said military police in the war-torn region of Sadaa Tuesday seized five trucks laden with explosives and supplies for the insurgents.  Meanwhile, Yemeni security forces arrested 12 al-Huthi rebels from a terrorist cell in the old Sadaa city in northern Yemen, and destroyed two workshops of terrorists, the state official news agency, Saba reported.  Undersecretary of Interior Ministry General Mohammed al-Qawsi told Saba Tuesday that the security forces arrested the rebels from a terrorist cell which targets security and stability of the Sadaa province.  A military source said the armed and security forces destroyed two workshops of terrorists, located at Oreig mountain between Saqeen and Hidan areas, which were used for fitting mines and bombs as well as some rebels’ accouterments in al-Malahid area.  The source mentioned that the military forces found a quantity of amassed armaments and explosives, cassettes, CDs and papers which the rebel elements left behind when they fled.   Thousands of people, soldiers and insurgents have been killed in Saada province since the intermittent war between the rebels and the government forces first broke out in 2004.
