Official Says Opposition Wants to Topple Saleh’s Regime

ahmadghanim1SANAA, 11 March -- Director of the Political Circle at the ruling General People’s Congress (GPC), Dr. Ahmad Ghanim Thursday told the Saudi-owned al-Sharaq al-Awsat newspaper that the opposition alliance in Yemen, the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) is seeking to topple President Saleh’s regime and that the JMP is grooming the alternative to come to power.  “The JMP alliance has one major goal and that is to remove President Ali Abdulalh Saleh and remove the ruling party,” he said, adding “this objective of theirs is clearly defined in their so-called rescue document.”

Parliament Passes Anti-terrorism Bill with ‘Reservations’

parliamenta10aSANAA, 29 Dec – Following years of delay, the Parliament Tuesday passed a counter-terror financing law but with reservations.  Some members expressed concern the law would hamper efforts to fund legitimate resistance movements and charitable organizations, undermine Yemen’s sovereignty and force authorities in Yemen to hand over Yemeni citizens to foreign states if they were convicted as supporters or financiers of terrorism.  Finance Minister who attended the session urged the assembly to vote for the treaty saying “Yemen must pass the bill so that it won’t be classified among countries that don’t support money laundering,” adding “we are subject to the United Nations laws and this treaty is legally bound in the UN.”  Some members objected to clause No. (1) of the bill which considers resisting occupation as an act of terrorism.

Defense Council Says National Dialogue Conference to be Held on Dec 26

SANAA, 13 Dec -- In a meeting headed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the National Defense Council Sunday approved a call by the President to hold a national conference for dialogue on December 26, the state official news agency, Saba reported, adding “the President had called for a serious and responsible dialogue under the umbrella of the constitutional legitimacy in which all political and social powers, and civil society organizations would take part to address all issues of concern to the nation.”  The council then reviewed a report submitted by the Supreme Security Commission on the events in the battlefield with Houthi terrorists in Sadaa and Harf Sufian.  It also reviewed anti-terrorism efforts and stressed the significance of “uniting efforts and cooperation to face the plague of terrorism,” said Saba, adding “the council also reviewed a report about sabotage activities in some districts in southern Yemen.”

Former Rebel Commander Says Hezbollah Chemists Helping Insurgents

SANAA, 10 Oct — Former field commander of the Shiite rebels in north Yemen, Abdullah al-Mahdoun Saturday said “Abdul-Malik al-Huthi is not the real field commander but others are leading the war in Sadaa,” adding “prior to the first round of war, the rebels did not possess heavy artillery and only had automatic weapons but afterwards, they received heavy weaponry from local elements who harbor rancorous animosity towards the state.  The rebels later began manufacturing arms using CDs, programs, chemists and physicists some of them were members of the Shiite Lebanese Hezbollah and others were from the Iranian al-Qods militant wing.”  Al-Mahdoun who led the rebels in Sadaa during the previous five rounds of war said in an interview with al-Jumhuriyya magazine: “I was recruited by Hussein al-Huthi who possessed a powerful way of convincing people using Qura’nic verses in his house in Maran.  I was persuaded that we were the only allies of God and the rest were allies of Satan .. when the first war erupted, I contacted Hussein al-Huthi and told him: We are fighting our brothers in the army.  He told me: They are worse than Americans and Israelis and that we would rule the world and re-build the Persian empire destroyed by the Arabs.”

Saleh Says Unbent in Resolve for Ending Rebellion in North Yemen

SANAA, 10 Oct — Speaking to air force pilots during a visit to al-Dilami military base, President Ali Abdullah Saleh Saturday vowed to crush the Shiite rebels in northern Yemen saying “we will never be lenient in confronting the gang of terrorism and sabotage,” and urged pilots to be “vigilant and alarmed.”  “The rebels caused more than 120 thousand people to be displaced from Sadaa and Harf Sufian,” Saleh told the pilots, adding “this gang came back from ancient caves trying to turn history back unaware that history would never turn back.”  He said “the Yemeni people will teach this gang its deserving lesson,” stressing “the people are resolved to get rid of this cancer,” adding “the state dealt responsibly with citizens from the governorate of Sadaa and from Harf Sufian.”  He lauded the ‘heroic’ efforts of the pilots and stressed “we are determined to move forward in our path to achieve development and construction goals and remove all obstacles from the way of the development process.”  Later the President, accompanied by prime minister, the vice president and senior state officials met with Yemeni expatriates and called on them to establish a bank to invest in Yemen.  “We have more than five million Yemenis living in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore alone,” Saleh said.
