Mosque Imams in Aden Support al-Qaeda

ADEN, 30 Dec -- The government official daily, 14-October Wednesday reported mosques in the southern port city of Aden have turned into “centers for systematic and coordinated support of al-Qaeda network.”The report accused Salafi clerics in Aden of inciting people against the government and against its recent attacks on alleged al-Qaeda hideouts in Ayban and Shabwa. “The city of Aden which was known over history for its religious tolerance, its churches and synagogues is now witnessing activities that go contrary to this history especially after the Ministry of Endowment removed moderate mosque Imams and replaced them with fanatic Salafi ones.

”The paper accused Salafis in Aden of “leading a fierce campaign against music, arts, sports, tourism, the cinema and against women holding ministerial posts,” adding “some mosque clerics in Aden have excommunicated journalists, intellectuals, and artists labeling them as apostates and renegades.”
