Lawzi: Yemen has Sound Plan in Place to Face al-Qaeda

lawzi9aSANAA, 29 Dec – Minister of Information and the government’s official spokesperson, Hassan al-Lawzi Tuesday told reporters following the Cabinet’s weekly meeting “Yemen won’t be a hub for any powers that practice terrorism and sabotage,” stressing “the government has a sound plan in place to face al-Qaeda and hunt down its members,” adding “efforts are underway to hunt all of al-Qaeda members be them Yemenis, Arabs or foreigners.”  He disclosed new plans to monitor foreigners studying Arabic in Yemen saying “the Cabinet has directed all of Yemen’s embassies abroad not to grant any visa to any person until a thorough background check has been done.”
In other news, the Appeal Court in Sanaa Tuesday upheld prison sentences of four al-Qaeda suspects handed by a lower court last month.  Tawfiq al-Faqiah, Ma’ad al-Daroub, Nabil al-Sirihii were sentenced to three years in prison for plots to attack foreign interests and the building of the Red Cross at the border with Saudi with explosive belts.  The fourth suspect, Isamel Ghorab received two years.  The same court also adjourned the trial of seven al-Qaeda suspects to January 26.  Meanwhile, the state security court sentenced ten men to jail terms between two and seven years for forging university degrees.
