The country contains large oil and gas reserves and is rich in mineral and fishery wealth. But today Yemen faces many challenges. Abject poverty, soaring population growth rate, water scarcity, high unemployment level, pervasive public and private corruption, internal divisions, tribalism, civil unrest, political intrigues, rapid inflation, boundary disputes, Shiite insurgency in the north, growing secessionist sentiments in the south, alarming piracy growth off the Gulf of Aden, and a wave of religious militancy led by al-Qaeda and Jihadists in the region making it one of the hottest spots in the world. The country rests heavily on foreign investments and on the development of the oil, gas, and mineral resources and the ongoing government commitment to promote economic, administrative and political reform brighten its future. But Yemen is complicated.
